AMD has announced that, in cooperation with Mixamo, has launched the new Face Plus, an advanced real-time motion capture and 3D facial animation technology for Unity Game engine. The new real-time facial capture technology, the Face Plus, should practically bring cheaper capture of facial expressions via standard webcams and transfer them in real time on a 3D character.
Since it is announced by AMD with cooperation with an AMD Ventures company, Mixamo, is is clear that Face Plus uses technology powered by AMD A-series APUs and GPU. The technology apparently offloads Mixamo's innovative and complex algorithms from the CPU to GPU.
The Face Plus is developed for devices with support for OpenCL 1.1 and newer and, according to AMD, enables rich, detailed motion capture at full camera frame rates, including typical standard webcam conditions, using an AMD APU. A system with AMD A10-4600M APU is actually capable of deliver 42 fps captures in real-time which is about a 13x improvement compared to using only the CPU.
It will pretty much make the developers life very easy, at least when it comes to facial expressions and we are quite sure that Indie game makers will certainly use it.
