Showing that Intel K-series overclocking is not limited to Intel Z87 Express chipset based motherboard and that it can be done on H87 and B85 based motherboards as well, Gigabyte has started to roll out beta BIOS updates for motherboards based on these two mainstream chipsets.
Although still market as beta, the BIOS updates for H87 and B85 Express chipset based motherboard is marked with FXc version number and enable K SKU CPU multiplier, according to the release notes. In short, this BIOS update will enable you to overclock Intel Haswell K-series CPUs such as Core i7-4770K and the Core i5-4670K by simply changing their base-clock multipliers, a feature that is generally locked out on these mainstream motherboards.
Many, if not all, motherboard manufacturers will hop on this train as Z87 Express chipset motherboards usually come with a hefty price tag and are meant for enthusiasts and not an average PC user that only wants to squeeze in as much performance from its K-series CPU as possible.
The new BIOS updates can be found at Gigabyte support site.
