Panasonic officially says goodbye to plasma

Halts all R&D on future plasma panels

Panasonic has apparently developed its last plasma panel and although the sales of all plasma TVs will continue, it appears that such TVs will slowly phase out.
In case you missed it, Panasonic was one of the biggest supporters of plasma panels and its latest ZT60, based on what appears to be the last developed high-end plasma panel, is one of the best plasma TVs that ever showed up on the market. The news came from the Panasonic Vice President Kiyoshi Okamoto, who said that Viera ZT60 uses the last plasma panel from research and development.

Apparently, Panasonic has already shifted some of its R&D workforce to OLED development which they plan to eventually replace its plasma lineup. Unfortunately, there are still no details regarding Panasonic's plans for OLED and the only thing we saw was the prototype at CES earlier in January.

Since Panasonic decided to slowly move out from plasma TV market, we will surely see a greater dominance of LCD based TVs. Plasma TVs were quite good but it looks like LCD based ones simply overtook them.
