It feels like an eternity we’ve last read the lines that PC sales are facing an upwards trend. In fact, year over year growth in Q2 2018 has been the strongest since Q1 2012. IDC claims a 2.7 percent growth rate over the period mentioned, which might be proof that the PC market is not yielding to phones and tablets. Market research firm Gartner is actually a little more cautious mentioning year-over-year growth of 1.4 percent.

According to Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner PC shipments in the second quarter of 2018 went up due to increased demand in the business market. The demand was strong enough to even compensate for a decline in the consumer segment.

This year’s second quarter was most beneficial for the big guns in the market such as Acer, Apple, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Other smaller companies were still seeing declines in growth.

Another fact that helped driving sales was the uptake of competition between Intel and AMD which is leading to more innovation as in more energy efficient and more powerful processors. Apart from that demands from the cryptomining market are on the decline which in turn leads to lower graphics cards prices which make desktop PCs with discrete GPUs more affordable.
