Almost one year ago, Intel has shown the Optane 900P SSDs which was limited to 480GB capacity. Now, almost one year later, the company has released a new version which feature a different design and it come in a new 960GB capacity. With the 905P, Intel has improved the design too adding a blue LED illumination.
At the moment there are two models available on Newegg: a 960GB unit that fits into a PCIe x4 slot and a 2.5" 480GB version with a U.2 connector. With this generation of Optane we might not see any M.2 version, since the controller is a bit too large for the M.2-2280 standard. Intel might use 22110 format in order to fit the controller on a M.2 card.
The Intel Optane 905P series 960GB PCIe x4 drive is listed on Newegg for $1602. The 480GB model from the same series based on U.2 form factor costs $658. For comparison's sake, the previous version based on PCIe x4 form factor with 480GB capacity costs $560. At the moment the prices are a bit too steep and we are wondering if we will see a price reduction during next days.
