As you might know, Intel aims to create high-end motherboards using their planned Z390 chipset. This upgraded version of the current Z370-offering expands the chipset by integrated AC-WLAN, USB 3.1 ports and several other features. It looks like, that like with the previous generation of chipsets, AMD will add a chipset with a name rather close to Intel's series.
A new slide leaked yesterday and it shows all AMD chipsets including one called Z490. That's rather interesting since it's the first time that we hear about it. According to the table, the new chipset will add more and faster PCIe lanes.
The upcoming AMD Z490 will come with 12 PCI-Express lanes instead of 8 like the current X470. What's interesting, AMD chipsets use PCIe 2.0 at the moment and the new one would add four PCIe Gen 3.0 lanes. This will also improve the storage side, since with the current generation you can use sixteen lanes for the graphics card, then four for NVMe storage and one for the interlink in-between the chipset and processor.
