ASUS has released its Hyper M.2 x16 PCIe add-in-card, which is a daughter-board that can be equipped with four M.2 SSDs. We have already seen this card in many pictures and videos lately and now it’s finally available. This is a VROC (Virtual RAID on CPU) card and it can be used in VROC modes on compatible motherboards.
It's not the first time that we hear about this Hyper M.2 x16 PCIe add-in-card. A few days ago well-known overclocker Roman "Der8auer" Hartung has tested an AMD X399 platform with eight NVMe SSDs in a RAID0 configuration with two of these Hyper M.2 cards. According to Guru3D, the Hyper M.2 x16 PCIe add-in-card works in VROC (Virtual RAID) mode on a few different X299 motherboards as well. However due to limitation from Intel, you might need a VROC activation key.
The VROC mode will be compatible with all the following motherboards:
- ROG RAMPAGE VI EXTREME
- ROG RAMPAGE VI APEX
- ROG STRIX X299-XE GAMING
- ROG STRIX X299-E GAMING
- PRIME X299-DELUXE
- PRIME X299-A
- TUF X299 MARK 1
- TUF X299 MARK 2
So far it's still unclear if the add-in-card will work with any brand of M.2 SSD or if there will be limitations as to with which models the card can be combined. According to Geizhals, the Hyper M.2 x16 PCIe add-in-card costs about 50 Euro.
