The guys from Chiphell have published more pictures on the ASUS X399 ROG Zenith Extreme motherboard. This gallery shows even more details about this upcoming flagship model and reveals the naked PCB. Furthermore we can see the I/O panel with all the connectors.
The X399 ROG Zenith Extreme is halfway between the standard ATX and an E-ATX form-factor motherboard and there is a total of eight DIMM slots, which you get due to the quad-channel memory interface Ryzen Threadripper ships with. Apart from that there is the "Aura" feature, which allows you to change the illumination of the board from within Windows. There are also four full-sized PCIe slots with metal-reinforcement, one PCIe x4 slot and one PCIe x1. The full-sized slots are wired x16/x8/x16/x8, even though the Ryzen Threadripper processor features 64 PCI-Express lanes. Between the first and the second full-sized PCIe slot there are two slots distance leaving plenty of room for graphics cards to breathe even in multi-GPU configurations.
On the storage side we see the ROG DIMM.2 adapter that can be equipped with two M.2 SSDs. The adapter card also comes with a mounting mechanism for a 50mm fan to prevent M.2 drives from thermal throttling. Furthermore there is space for two M.2 SSDs under the detachable chipset heatsink cover. Since this cover features thermal padding, at least one M.2 SSD might benefit from this heatsink. In addition there are six SATA 6Gbps ports, one U.2 port and a USB 3.1 front panel connector. Looking for additional features we find onboard buttons and a debug display, support for USB 3.1 and a high-quality power design.
The CPU is powered by an 8-phase VRM and in order to prevent overheating issues, ASUS installed a 40mm fan next to the secondary heatsink. Looking at the external connectors placed directly at the I/O-panel, ASUS equipped the X399 ROG Zenith Extreme motherboard with eight USB 3.0 ports and two USB 3.1 Gen2 ports. Furthermore there is one Gigabit Ethernet port and the analogue audio panel with optical out as well as a WiFi module with two connectors for antennas. ASUS could launch the X399 ROG Zenith Extreme alongside AMD's market-launch of the Ryzen Threadripper processors, which is slated to happen August 9th.
