Radeon RX Vega won’t be power efficient at all

300W air cooled, 375W water cooled

The launch of AMD’s RX Vega series graphics cards is one of those that’s being expected but it apparently takes ages until it happens. According to latest information it’s supposed to take place in early-August or even late-July during the Siggraph 2017 event.

According to specifications AMD has already revealed and thanks to too early listings the Radeon Pro Vega Frontier Edition is an air cooled card with a TDP of a whopping 300W. Apart from that there is also going to be a water cooled variant with an even more stunning 375W TDP. Comparing that to the 275W NVIDIA’s Titan Xp requires makes that card look like a lighter compared to the camp fire you get with the water cooled AMD card.

Meanwhile some new rumors are starting to appear where an alleged MSI representative posted in the Dutch forums Tweakers.net that the company is now working on their Vega based cards but they require “a damn lot of power”. If water cooled variant of Vega is really going to pull up to 375 Watts from the wall then I’d perfectly understand this statement.

Apart from that adding all things together it just makes too much sense not to be true. Usually when a launch of a product just isn’t happening something must be off in one way or another. Our assumption always was and still is that AMD is not hitting the performance target they set themselves and now they’re trying to get as much out of the card as possible, no matter what it costs.
