Memory prices on the rise

Price going up also in 2017

If you’ve been looking for new DRAM for your rig during the past months you might have noticed that prices were on the rise continuously. TrendForce has published their quarterly report explaining the different factors that contribute to this development. Between September and October of 2016 the average price of 4GB DRAM memory has increased by 20% jumping from 14.5$ to 17.5$.

According to DRAMeXchange these increases are the result of production being shifting from PC to mobile and server DRAM. Especially in the mobile sector the demand has increased. PC DRAM memory accounts only for 20% of the overall DRAM production. The low inventories of "branded DRAM" go with higher-than-expected demand for products based on DRAM memory. This higher demand comes after the PC DRAM market which was undersupplied in the second half of 2016. The result is pretty clear and all the prices go up on all types of DRAM.

Although the manufacturers are creating additional capacities, these measures won’t have an effect before 2018. The undersupply will continue and the issue is going to become even worse resulting in even higher prices.

To make an example as to how the prices have been rising we’ve checked Geizhals, which features a price tracker over time that. According to Geizhals, the Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4-2400 16GB memory kit cost 142 Euro in January 2017 and meanwhile, in March, the same kit already costs 178 Euro. In the case of a 32GB kit the story is the same, in January the price was around 283 Euro while now it’s hit 334 Euro already.
