Toshiba unveils their new BG series SSDs

M.2 NVMe solid state drives

Toshiba has first shown their new BG series of SSDs, which are based on a multi-chip module. The company combines their own controller and TLC NAND flash in a M.2 package with PCI-Express 3.0 x2 interface and NVMe protocol.

At the moment there aren’t many details available on the specifications of these new SSDs. Nevertheless one thing becomes rather apparent when looking at the drive: measuring 30mm in length it’s very short, not to say tiny. Apart from that there are two incisions visible on the connector, indicating a PCIe Gen3 x2 interface has been used.

To create such a small M.2 SSD Toshiba this drive is based on a multi-chip design, with the controller and the TLC NAND flash memory residing in the same package. The new drives will be available with 128GB, 256GB and 512GB of storage capacity. Toshiba is also selling these new SSDs as chip-only solution to notebook vendors, allowing OEM customers to solder these units directly on motherboards.
