Xiaomi has pulled a big surprise yesterday by announcing its new 6.4-inch Mi MIX smartphone that has nearly no bezels, custom curved screen, high-end hardware and an impressive 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio, putting a lot of pressure on big names like Samsung and Apple.
Since everyone expected the Mi Note 2 smartphone which was also announced yesterday, the Xiaomi Mi MIX was a big surprise, with its all-ceramic body, curved-edge custom 6.44-inch 2040x1080 resolution, 17:9 aspect ratio, screen and high-end hardware.
The new Xiaomi Mi MIX will certainly give Apple and Samsung a run for its money, and practically shames those two by making a smartphone that is nearly twice cheaper and pack some impressive specifications and great looks. Measuring at 173.1x88.3x7.5mm, the Xiaomi Mi MIX is just a bit taller, wider and thicker than iPhone 7 Plus (158x2x77.9x7.3mm), which has a smaller screen.
In order to make an all-screen smartphone, with a only small bar at the bottom, Xiaomi had to think outside the box and remove both the earpiece, light and proximity sensors. The earpice is redesigned and uses a piezoelectric ceramic driver while it also comes with ultrasonic proximity sensor that works through the screen.
As far as the hardware goes, the new Xiaomi Mi MIX packs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 2.35GHz SoC, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 128GB of UFS 2.0 storage, support for 192 kHz / 24-bit audio and a 4400mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0.
It also features all the usual connectivity options, including full NFC functionality and dual-SIM. Xiaomi also had to squeeze the front 5-megapixel camera at the bottom and included a 16-megapixel camera at the rear. It runs on Xiaomi's MIUI 8 OS.
Although this was announced as a concept smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi MIX will actually be available as of November 4th with a price set at RMB 3,499/ US $515 for the standard 4GB/128GB version while the MI MIX 18K version with 18K gold rims, 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage space, will be coming as well with a price set at RMB 3999/ US $590.
