MSI adds X99A Tomahawk to its line-up

Will it hit us like an axe?

MSI already has quite a few X99 based motherboards in its current line-up. Nevertheless the company decided to add yet another model, which goes by the name X99A Tomahawk. This particular model serves the entry-level segment regarding the vendor's X99 offerings.

The MSI X99A Tomahawk is a standard ATX based motherboard, that has been equipped with quite a few features. Therer are for example eight DDR4 DIMM slots supporting up to 128 Gigabyte of RAM. For expansion cards there are three full-sized, metal-strengthened PCIe 3.0 slots as well as two PCIe 2.0 x1 slots. Looking at the storage side of things we find eight SATA 6Gbps connectors, one SATA Express interface, one U.2 connector and an M.2 slot, while the latter supports M.2 cards with all recent form factors.

Additionally there are eight USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 connectors, while four can be found internally and four externally. There is also a USB 3.1 Type-A as well as a Type-C port. On this board MSI is using their so called Audio Boost 3 implementation, which is basically a beefed up ALC1150 coded. Furhtermore there are two Gigabit Ethernet ports at the I/O panel, where one is driven by an Intel I218-LM and the other by an Intel I210-AT chip. The X99A Tomahawk also supports RGB LED strips, which can be controlled by MSIs own software.

Checking prices on Geizhals we find the MSI X99A Tomahawk listed for 299 Euro, which is in the same region like similar offerings from other vendors.
