AMD has released an updated regarding the Radeon RX 480 power issue, stating that the new Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 drivers, coming in the next two days, will lower the power draw from the PCIe slot, with minimal performance impact.
The new driver will have plenty of updates and will address power distribution on the Radeon RX 480 which will lower the current drawn from the PCIe bus. AMD also notes that they are still confident that hte levels of reported power draws by the RX 480 "do not pose a risk of damage to motherboards or other PC components", but have still decided to make some changes.
The new driver will not only lower the power drawn from the PCIe slot but also come with a "Compatibility Toggle" in the Radeon Settings, Global Settings tab, which will be disabled by default. This toggle will reduce total power draw with minimal performance impact.
In addition to fixing the power issue, the new Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 drivers will also bring game specific performance improvements which will raise the performance by up to 3 percent in popular game titles on AMD's latest Polaris architecture graphics cards.
It is still not clear on how big that "small performance impact" actually is but we should see soon as the new Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.7.1 drivers are coming before the end of the week.
