Apple next-gen notebooks to have AMD GPUs

Based on Polaris 11 GPU

It appears that AMD managed to score a big win as the next-generation notebooks from Apple will actually use its Polaris-based GPUs.

There have been rumors that Nvidia might have scored a similar deal, but newest rumors suggest that AMD will actually be a part of Apple's next-generation Macbook notebooks with its new Polaris architecture GPUs.

According to a rumor from Fudzilla.com, citing sources at AMD, the new Macbook Pro with Polaris 11 GPU is already in the making and should be based on Polaris 11 GPU, due to is small footprint and low TDP.

A similar report goes on saying that Polaris could also end up in iMac systems and this MXM-based GPU has 10 Compute Units or 640 Stream Processors, which should provide around 1-1.25 TFLOPS of compute power. With a TDP of under 40W and 4GB of RAM, these chips should be enough for both Apple's iMac systems as well as Macbook notebooks.

AMD will also make a Polaris 10 sub-150W TDP chip that should replace the R9 M395X, currently in the 5K iMac as Apple needs a lot more power to drive the 5120x2880 resolution screen.

This is a big win for AMD and hopefully it will put AMD in much better position as it will certainly fix its market-share.
