Playstation 4K Neo wants games to run at 1080p

Makes developers unhappy

It appears that Sony has made some strict requirements for its upcoming Playstation 4K, codenamed Neo, as it will force developers to make games that run natively at 1080p resolution and also prevents them to make games specifically for the new Playstation device.

According to some sources, specifically a tweet from Colin Moriarty from Kinda Funny Games, developers are not happy with these strict requirements.

Sony needs developers to make games that run natively at 1080p in order for 4K upscaling to work flawlessly. This should not be a problem for developers as most of the current games on Playstation 4 run on at least 900p resolution and the new Playstation 4 Neo, or whatever Sony ends up calling it, will be based on a more powerful custom APU from AMD.

In case you missed it, earlier rumors suggested that PS4 Neo will pack a custom AMD APU with 2.1GHz clocked 8-core Jaguar CPU part and Polaris 10 Ellesmere GPU with 8GB of GDDR5 memory.

Sony will also prevent developers to make games specifically for the new Playstation 4 Neo as well. This puts developers in a whole lot trouble as they have to make a game that will run good on both consoles.

While current games will not be covered with these requirements it appears that Sony will push developers hard, and even Bioware's co-founder said that this is "a gigantic pain in the ass."

Most, if not all of the hardware like controllers, Playstation Camera and Playstation VR will be compatible with the new Playstation Neo so that won't be a problem.

Sony is expected to reveal more details at the E3 2016 show in June so we will know more then.
