Apple has launched an updated 12-inch Macbook notebook which will be coming with new Intel Core M Skylake CPUs, larger battery, and a new Rose Gold color option.
While the hardware side has been somewhat upgraded and updated, the new Apple Macbook 2016 Edition still retains the same design and look with 28.05x19.65x0.35-1.31cm dimensions and 0.92kg weight. It still also comes with the same 12-inch 2304x1440 IPS LCD screen as well as one USB 3.1 Type-C port, dual-band 802.11ac WiFi and all other usual specifications and features.
According to a couple of reports, Apple has updated the storage side as well, so new the new Apple Macbook 2016 Edition will be using PCI-Express 3.0 x4 SSD rather than PCIe 2.0 x4, which should provide a mild boost in performance. Unfortunately, it will still be available only with 256GB or 512GB options, depending on the SKU.
According to Apple, the new Macbook 2016 Edition will be also available in three different SKUs, with the Core m3-6Y30, Core m5-6Y54 or the Core m7-6Y75 CPU. All three are dual-core CPUs based on Skylake architecture and feature Intel HD Graphics 515 (GT2) GPU with 24 EUs, 300MHz base and up to 950MHz Turbo clock.
The Core m3-6Y30 works at 1.1GHz base and 2.2GHz Turbo clocks while the Core m5-6Y54 works at 1.2GHz base and 2.7GHz Turbo clocks. The top-offer, is the Core m7-6Y75 CPU, working at 1.3GHz base and 3.1GHz Turbo clock. These three CPUs should not only bring a decent performance boost from earlier available Core M Broadwell chips, but also significantly improve the power efficiency.
All three SKUs will also be available with 8GB of LPDDR3-1866 memory.
Apple has also updated the battery in the new Macbook 2016 Edition so it comes with a 41.4Wh battery. Larger battery and more power efficient Skylake Core M CPUs should also improve a battery life in the new Macbook 2016 Edition.
Although only two "slower" SKUs are currently available for pre-order, while the Core m7-6Y75 version will be available later, the price should remain the same as with earlier available Broadwell 12-inch Macbook. This means that it will start at US $1299 for the base version with 256GB of storage, US $1599 for the Core m5-6Y54 version with 512GB of storage, and US $1749 for the top-end Core m7-6Y75 version with 512GB of storage.
