Intel demonstrates 3D Xpoint Optane SSD

Copying files at 2GB/s

During its Intel Developer Forum (IDF) 2016 in Shenzhen, China, Intel has demonstrated its new Intel Optane technology showing it transfer files at up to 2GB/s.

Intel has previously showed its 3D XPoint Optane NVMe SSD, which is expected to be available in a couple of different form-factors, including PCIe M.2, U.2, PCIe add-on card as well as in the DDR4 DIMM form-factor.

At the IDF 2016, Intel's Rob Crooke, VP for Non-Volatile Memory Solutions Group (NSG) and Ian Yang, President of Intel China, showcased an Optane SSD system based on PCIe x4 NVMe form-factor which was compared to a SATA SSD system, probably based on two recently announced SSD 540 or 5400 Series enterprise-class SSDs.

The new Intel 3D Xpoint Optane SSDs promise both instant boot for devices as well as impressive transfer speeds and the system running at IDF 2016 managed to peak at 2GB/s while transfering a movie file, which is way above 284MB/s on the other system based on standard SATA-interface SSDs.

Of course, the comparison is not exactly fair as SATA-based SSDs are quite limited but it is still nice to see the actual real-world performance of Intel's upcoming Optane SSDs.

First Intel 3D XPoint Optane SSDs are expected in the second half of next year so we will have to wait a bit longer.
