AMD AM4 to feature 140W support and µOPGA socket

Packing 1,331 pins

AMD is expected to launch its new Zen CPU architecture later this year, but before that, it will launch its new AM4 socket, used also by Bristol Ridge APUs, and today we have some details regarding the socket.

As previously announced, AMD plans to use the AM4 platform for both future APUs and CPUs. To be precise, both the upcoming FX-series Zen-based Summit Ridge CPUs and Excavator-based Bristol Ridge APUs will use the same AM4 platform.

According to a newest leak from Bitsandchips.it, the new AM4 socket will µOPGA, have 1,331 pins and have support for up to 140W TDP chips. AMD has been using versions of PGA socket for a long time and the new ?OPGA socket will reduce the pin diameter, something that had to be done as this is a 33 percent increase from 950 pins AMD had on previous AM and FM sockets.

The support for 140W TDP CPUs is not a surprise and in line with what Intel done on its LGA2011 platform.

Hopefully, AMD Zen-based FX-series Summit Ridge CPUs will be coming in October as earlier rumored so we can finally check out the performance of the Zen CPU architecture.
