It appears that earlier released SteamVR Performance Test benchmark, which tests if your PC is ready for virtual reality gaming, has stirred a lot of attention and today we have a list of AMD and Nvidia graphics cards and their scores in the benchmark.
While AMD is doing quite well in that benchmark with two Radeon R9 Nano scoring the highest 11 point score, Nvidia definitely takes the throne as its single-GPU GTX 980 Ti and Titan X hold the first two places. Of course, the GTX Titan X costs as much as two Radeon R9 Nano graphics cards so it does not come as a surprise that these two are leveled at the top.
In a results list coming from AMD, The Geforce GTX 980 Ti scores 10.5 points while AMD's Radoen R9 Fury X and R9 Fury will get you 9.6 and 9.2 in the same benchmark, respectively. Bear in mind that anything below the 6 point score will get you into "VR Capable" category rather than the "VR Ready" one.
The GTX 980 is almost leveled off with AMD's R9 Nano, with GTX 980 scoring 8.1 and R9 Nano scoring 8 points. The R9 390 lineup, including R9 390X and R9 390 gives a score well above the magic 6 points and same goes for Nvidia GTX 970 and R9 290, but just barely.
According to a list compiled by Wccftech.com, which calculates performance per dollar, taking into account current prices in the US, the best bang for buck are the US $325 priced R9 390 and the US $300 priced GTX 970. If you are looking for a bit more performance, the R9 390X and the R9 Fury are next on the list. The bottom of the performance per buck list are taken by those US $1000 priced Radeon R9 Nano Crossfire and Geforce GTX Titan X setups.
The age of VR is definitely coming and although consumer versions of first VR headsets are yet to ship to early-adopters, there is a lot of interest for them and both Nvidia and AMD have hardware for it.
