Could AMD Project F be Polaris 10?

232 square millimeter and 14nm

It looks like the guys over at 3DCenter have spotted another interesting piece of information regarding upcoming AMD GPUs. Over on LinkedIn, Jurgen Hao - a former AMD employee - posts information on different projects he has been working on.

On 3DCenter.de this bit of information led to a huge discussion wheter a 232mm2 could be Polaris 10 or not. After several pages the guys came to the conclusion that it would make no sense to launch a 14nm, 232mm2 chip in the high-end segment. If you put into persepective that a 14nm, 232mm2 chip is similar to a 28nm, 464mm2 die, that would mean that this new chip would be on Hawaii level (438mm2). For a new high-end GPU that would simply not suffice. A new high-end 14nm chip would need to measure about 300 to 350mm2 in order to offer the same transistor count as today's AMD Fiji (596mm2) or nVidias GM200 (601mm2).

So, what else could we be looking at here? There are even more ideas on that over at 3DCenter.de and the two which appear to be most likely are that either this is a chip, which could be launched somewhen later in 2017 or that it's simply a test project. But the overall consens is definitely that "Project F" is not going to be Polaris 10.
