AMD confirms Zen for high-end desktops in 2016

Customer sampling starting next year

While we already heard and seen a lot regarding AMD's upcoming Zen CPU architecture, AMD has now officially confirmed that it will be coming to high-end desktops in 2016.

During Raymond James Technology Investors Conference held yesterday, AMD's CFO, Devinder Kumar, confirmed that AMD plans to introduce FX-series high-end desktop CPUs based on Zen architecture next year, which should both renew competition in the desktop space as well as drive company's margins.

Earlier rumors suggested that AMD might have trouble in delievering Zen-based products next year due to problems with 14nm manufacturing process at Globalfoundries, but those rumors were quickly denied by AMD. Duringthe same investors conference, Kumar noted that Zen is in its final stage of executing and should be taping out over the next several months, with customers samples following shortly. Kumar also added that Zen architecture will first arrive to high-end desktops and then the servers, due to "reuse approach for cores".

AMD depends a lot on Globalfoundries and its ability to deliver on the 14nm FinFET manufacturing process as the company also plans to introduce new GPUs based on the same process next year.

Hopefully, AMD will be able to deliver on its promises for the next year as, in the end, consumers will be those that will benefit the most from successful competition between Intel and AMD.
