Valve's SteamOS does not work well

Reduces gaming performance by 50 percent

It appears all is not well with Valve's SteamOS as according to a new report, SteamOS actually performs up to 50 percent worse than Windows OS, running on the same hardware.

According to a report and test ran by Ars Technica, which had a system based on Intel Pentium G3220, 8GB of RAM and GTX 660, running on both SteamOS and Windows 10, SteamOS was actually running up to 50 percent slower.

In Shadow of Mordor game at ultra preset, SteamOS was only capable of providing 14.6 FPS, while Windows 10 managed to pull a playable 34.5 FPS. Even at low preset, the same game got 55.3 FPS on the SteamOS and a rather high 87 FPS on the Windows 10. Similar thing was with some other games, including Source Engine-based Portal, TF2 and DOTA 2 as well as Metro: Last Light Redux game. The only game that preformed similar on both the Steam OS and the Windows 10 OS was Left4Dead 2.

Gaming on Linux, which SteamOS is based on, was always a gray area as neither games nor drivers were optimized and gaming was always reserved for Windows OS.

Valve needs to optimize the performance as soon as possible if it wants its Steam Machines to be a success.
