While Valve has earlier confirmed that the Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows would work on Steam OS, it appears that this isn't the case as it only supports Windows 10 OS, at least for now.
According to the report from Venturebeat.com, the recently released Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows will actually only work on Windows 10 OS. While Valve has earlier confirmed that it would work on both the Steam Link and Steam Machine devices, the report suggests that Valve has now corrected its original statement and that the adapter will not work on any Steam hardware.
To make things worse, it appears that Microsoft has somewhat built in a hardware lock that allows the Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows to work only on Windows 10 and it does not even support Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 OS, let alone Linux, Mac or SteamOS.
Venturebeat.com managed to get a statement from a Microsoft spokesperson saying that :"The Xbox Wireless Adapter supports Windows 10 to enable a unified gaming experience across devices and optimize unique experiences you’ll only find on Windows 10 devices. Beyond that we have nothing new to announce at this time.”
This is quite important as while the Windows 10 OS was a free upgrade, plenty of gamers are still sticking to Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 OS.
Valve has made its own Steam Controller which even works with the original Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter so unless you are running on Windows 10 OS, you might want to skip the Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows.
