It appears that GDDR5 will still be around of a while and despite the recent implementation of High Bandwidth Memory standard, both AMD an Nvidia might use GDDR5X on its next-generation graphics cards.
While High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) offers both higher performance as well as better energy-efficiency compared to GDDR5 memory, the more accessible and cheaper GDDR5, as GDDR5X version, might be used with the next-generation graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia.
In a new leaked DRAM maker presentation, GDDR5X will bring plenty of improvements including double the data-rate per memory access, 64 byte/access and offer up to 16Gbps of memory bandwidth. It is also much cheaper to implement considering that it has identical pin layout as the currently used GDDR5 memory.
According to DRAM makers, like Micron, the GDDR5X is describe as a cost-effective solution compared to the new High Bandwidth Memory.
According to a report from 3DNew.ru site, both AMD and Nvidia are considering support for GDDR5X. While both companies might use High Bandwidth Memory for their high-end graphics cards, GDDR5X might find its place in the mainstream and performance segment.
