AMD Zen SoCs coming to future iMacs?

Might be a big win for AMD

While Apple has been close with AMD lately with AMD FirePro graphics card in Mac Pro notebooks and Radeon graphics in some of the new iMacs, the newest report suggests that Apple might use AMD's upcoming Zen processors for its future iMacs.

The biggest win for AMD are custom SoCs found in Xbox One and Playstation 4 and that is certainly something that Apple noticed as, according to a report from Wccftech.com, Apple could tap AMD for a custom SoC based on the upcoming Zen architecture for its next-generation iMacs.

AMD's Zen architecture looks good on paper and the company has put a lot of effort into it so a big win like making a custom SoC for Apple might be just what the company needs as it has not been doing good lately, despite earlier big win for making custom SoCs for consoles.

First processors based on the Zen architecture should be available next year and the report suggest that Zen-based iMacs would not be ready for market until 2017 or even 2018. During the last quarterly financial call, AMD's CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, noted that the company has secured two new semi-custom design wins and Apple's future iMacs might well be one of those.

In any case, we are still far away from new iMacs and we have still to see AMD's Zen architecture in action.
