Qualcomm has announces its new Quick Charge 3.0 technology that promises some rather impressively fast charging times.
To debut with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 SoC next year, the new Quick Charge 3.0 technology will be able to charge compatible smartphones from 0 to 80 percent in just 35 minutes.
While the Snapdragon 820 SoC will be the first to feature the Quick Charge 3.0, it appears that it will not be the only one as Qualcomm will bring the same feature to Snapdragon 620, 618, 617 and 430 SoCs as well.
The Quick Charge 3.0 will offer additional improvements in terms of charging options and while Quick Charge 2.0 offered four charging voltages, 5V, 9V, 12V and 20V, Quick Charge 3.0 provides flexibility with 200mV increments from 3.6V to 20V. According to Qualcomm, this allows the device to request just enough voltage as it needs to reach the desired charge current, thus resulting in minimized losses, increased efficiency, and improved thermal performance.
The new Quick Charge 3.0 will also maintain forward and backward compatibility with previous versions of Quick Charge as well as with currently available connectors, including USB Type-C.
According to Qualcomm, there are currently more than 40 mobile devices and 100 certified accessories using Quick Charge technology but the fact that you will be able to charge the smartphone in less than an hour certainly sounds impressive.
