At its special event Apple has unveiled its two new flagship smartphones, the iPhone 6S and the larger iPhone 6S Plus, both featuring a faster SoC, 3D Touch and new cameras.
As rumored earlier, both the 4.7-inch iPhone 6S and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6S Plus will be equipped with the A9 SoC. According to Apple, the new A9 SoC is the 3rd-generation 64-bit SoC with new transistor architecture and will bring up to 70 percent CPU performance improvement and 90 percent GPU performance improvement. In addition to the A9 SoC, there is also the M9 motion coprocessor.
As expected, the iPhone 6S features a 4.7-inch 1334x750 IPS LCD screen, which is the same one that was behind the previous Apple iPhone 6, except for the force sensing layer responsible for the 3D Touch feature, which detects pressure and allows for new gestures such as Peek and Pop. Same goes for the iPhone 6S Plus, which now has the same 5.5-inch 1920x1080 IPS LCD screen, just as the iPhone 6 Plus.
Both the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus are larger, thicker and heavier, compared to predecessors, something that we certainly did not expect. It appears that the better strength of the glass screen and 7000-series aluminum alloy for the back cover added some weight on both models. The precise dimensions of the iPhone 6S are set at 138.3x67.1x7.1mm with 143g of weight while iPhone 6S Plus measures 158.2x77.9x7.3mm and weighs 192g.
Cameras on both phones are pretty much the same and much better compared to predecessors. Both smartphones got the new 12-megapixel iSight rear camera with 1.22µm pixels and True Tone Flash. The difference is that iPhone 6S Plus also gets optical image stabilization. The front camera on both smartphones has been updated and is now a 5-megapixel f/2.2 camera.
On the connectivity side, both smartphones come with upgraded 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and updated LTE support for up to 300Mbps.
Both new smartphones will be available in silver, space gray, gold, and rose gold color options.
Both the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus will be available on September 25th, with pre-orders opening on September 12th. Pricing will be identical to the iPhone 6 models available last year, with the 16GB iPhone 6s starting at US $199.99 with on contract and the 16GB iPhone 6s Plus starting at US $299.99 on contract. Unlocked pricing has not been disclosed but it is most likely that the iPhone 6S will go for US $649.99 while iPhone 6S Plus will start at US $749.99.
