SK Hynix plans to spend a total of 46 trillion won (US $38 billion) as a part of investment plan that will include three M14 DRAM chip factories in South Korea.
According to a report from Reuters.com, SK Hynix is pushing hard to compete with its rivals like Samsung, Micron and Toshiba and will start its plan by investing US $31 trillion won (US $25.94 billion) in two new M14 DRAM chip plants in South Korea, which should update company's production technologies and make it more competitive on the market.
According to SK Hynix, the two new plants should be finished by 2024 and should help SK Hynix to remain competitive and probably hold is second largest DRAM maker title, just shadowed by Samsung. According to analysts, the new investment should not harm the profitability of the company and its shares already got boosted up by as much as 9.3 percent after the announcement.
The announcement came during the ceremony for the completion of the largest SK Hynix DRAM factory in Icheon, South Korea, which cost US $15 trillion won. While SK Hynix will do well with the new High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and is currently on track to mass-produce second-generation HBM, it is still behind Samsung in 3D NAND production.
