Those having early access to the upcoming Radeon R9 390X have decided to take it apart in order to check out the PCB and compared it to the earlier available Radeon R9 290X graphics, which, according to these pictures are pretty much identical.
While we have expected certain improvements, including the earlier rumored Graphics Core Next 1.2 update, it appears that the Radeon R9 390X will be a complete rebrand of the earlier available Radeon R9 290X, just with 8GB of memory.
Pictured up close at Hardforum.com, the PCB on the XFX Radeon R9 390X is identical to the AMD reference PCB for the Radeon R9 290X, down to every component. The only spotted difference is the brand of chokes and bigger caps, as well as 512Gbit GDDR5 memory chips which add up to 8GB of GDDR5 memory.
Since the Grenada GPU looks identical to the Hawaii GPU which was behind the Radeon R9 290 series, it is highly unlikely that we might see Graphics Core Next 1.2 architecture as an improvement but rather just see higher GPU and memory clocks.
