HGST announces world's first 10TB enterprise HDD

The HGST Ultrastar Archive Ha10

HGST has unveiled the world's first 10TB enterprise HDD that will be a part of the Ultrastar lineup, the Ultrastar Archive Ha10.

The new Ultrastar Archive Ha10 HDD combines HGST second-generation HelioSeal platform with shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technologies, without compromising reliability and performance.

In case you missed it earlier, HGSTs HelioSeal technology is company's Helium hermetic sealing technology where the hard drive mechanism is sealed with Helium. Being an inert gas with one seventh the density of air, it reduces friction and lower power usage, heat and Total cost of ownership (TCO) of the drive as well as allows HGST to make higher disk and data track density.

The Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology is used to overlap data tracks on the HDD, similar to roofing tiles, also known as shingles. This technology allows HGST to avoid the usage of ultra-narrow reading/writing heads but still keep an increased track data density, which in future should lead to even higher data densities.

Specification wise, HGST's Ultrastar Ha10 HDD comes in a standard 3.5-inch form-factor with SATA 6Gbps or SAS 6Gbps interface. It has 256MB data buffer, a rotational speed of 7200 RPM, average latency of 4.16ms and offers sustained transfer rate of 157MB/s for read and 68MB/s for write. It is also rated for 2 million hours MTBF with 600,000 load/unload cycles and has a 5-year warranty.

The UltraStar Archive Ha10 will be joining HGST's UltraStar He8 and He6, 8TB and 6TB HDDs with same HelioSeal technology.

Unfortunately, the new Ultrastar Archive Ha10 will only be available to enterprise customers and HGST did not reveal any details regarding the price or the availability date.
