AMD Zen offers 40% IPC increase over Excavator

Zen CPU architecture is impressive

During its Investors Day presentation, AMD's CEO Lisa Su and CTO Mark Papermaster, unveiled more details regarding AMD's future Zen CPU architecture, which should bring significant performance increase compared to Excavator.

While AMD already shed some details regarding Zen architecture earlier, during its Investors Day presentation, company said that it should offer 40 percent increase in IPC (Instructions Per Clock) compared to Excavator CPU core architecture, which should translate to rather impressive performance increase.

The new slides suggest that Zen CPU core architecture will offer simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), new high-bandwidth, low latency cache system and be based on energy-efficient FinFET design.

Another slide also suggest that AMD plans to use the same AM4 socket for both CPUs and APUs. First products based on the new Zen CPU architecture are expected in 2016 and will include both new FX-series CPU and AMD's 7th generation A-series desktop APUs.
