Samsung already had some issues with sequential read performance on the EVO 840 SSD and although some were fixed earlier, new performance issues showed up and Samsung has now released a new fix for it.
The original problem was patched back in October last year, the issues started to appear again and while Samsung promised that the fix is coming in March, it appears that it took a bit longer and the new one will be ready later this month.
According to Samsung, the new fix will address the cell voltage drift which seems to be responsible for the problem and Samsung has "revised the firmware algorithm to maintain consistency in performance for old data under exceptional circumstances. This algorithm is based on a periodic refresh feature that can maintain the read performance of this older data."
In addition to adding a new algorithm that is based on a periodic refresh, the read performance has also been improved with that same algorithm. According to Samsung, users can upgrade to the new firmware via Magician 4.6 and without using the performance restoration tool.
Of course, since it is impossible to know if the fix will work, at least not right away, but it is nice to know that Samsung is constantly working on fixing any problems that show up with their SSDs.
