While it was expected that the company will announce a new Macbook Air, Apple surprised everyone during its Spring Forward March event by introducing a new 12-inch notebook, simply called the new Macbook. Featuring a 12-inch Retina screen, Intel Broadwell Core M CPU, a new USB Type C connector and a new even thinner design, the new 12-inch Macbook will certainly be a quite popular notebook in the Macbook lineup.
The new Macbook, as Apple decided to call it, is built around a 12-inch screen with 2304x1440 resolution, which, according to Apple, consumes 30 percent less power than previous displays. The screen in .88mm thick and packs a total of 3.3 million pixels narrower bezels and has glass on it, edge to edge.
The new Macbook is a mere 13.1mm thick and weighs 2 pounds (0.9kg), which makes it 24 percent thinner than the previously released Macbook Air. Apple also redesigned the motherboard and thanks to Intel's Broadwell Core M CPUs, it will be completely fanless, which all allowed Apple to make the thinnest Macbook so far.
Apple also equipped the new Macbook with a new keyboard which covers entire width of the notebook and uses new butterfly mechanism, which should offer more precise typing experience, according to Apple, and is actually thinner. The keyboard also got individual LEDs for each key. In addition to the keyboard, Apple also equipped the new Macbook with a new trackpad which is no longer clickable, but rather has force sensors with "haptic feedback" mechanism.
Apple also got rid of all ports and decided that the new Macbook only needs one, USB Type C port. This one will handle power, data and everything else and it is the first Macbook in years that does not have a MagSafe connector.
When it comes to specs, the new Macbook will be available in two base versions, with 1.1GHz Core M CPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage, which will start at US $1,299. There is a second version that is upgraded to 1.2GHz Core M CPU with 3GHz Boost, same 8GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage, starting at US $1,599. It will be available in three color choices, Space Gray, Silver and Gold and should start shipping on April 10th.
Apple's new Macbook certainly looks impressive and should fit nicely between Apple's 11- and 13-inch Macbook Air models.
