While it was earlier rumored that Samsung might have dropped the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 due to overheating issues, according to Samsung's CEO, it appears that Snapdragon 810 was just not good enough for Samsung and its two latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge.
Speaking to The Korea Times, Samsung's CEO, J.K. Shin noted that Samsung did use Qualcomm's SOCs earlier but also notes that the company certainly has a choice, "ff Qualcomm chips are good enough, then we will use them." Although not said directly, this suggest that Qualcom's Snapdragon 810 SoC was not good enough for Samsung and it decided to use its 14nm Exynos 7420 SoC, a 64-bit octa-core part.
