AMD has no interest in Chromebook market

Not without better specifications

AMD's CTO, Mark Papermaster has recently unveiled that AMD has no interest in Chromebook market, at least not until such systems get better specifications or a better price.

Speaking with some reporters during the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), AMD's CTO, Mark Papermaster, said that AMD is not interested in the Chromebook market, at least not until such systems can match AMD's APUs in terms of specifications and features.

Papermaster described the Chromebook market as "a race to the bottom", which, currently, is not in line with AMD's business plan. “You have to at least get paid for that value when you’re working on graphics. You go below that, and you’re looking at $7 chips,” said Papermaster.

While Chromebook market is growing pretty fast, it is definitely not big in overall PC market. Recent IDC report suggested that 4.6 million Chromebooks were sold during last year which represents about 1.5 percent of the market.

While something might make sense for Intel, it does not necessarily means that it should make sense for AMD as well.
