HGST preparing to launch 10TB HDDs

Helium-filled HDDs with SMR technology

HGST, a Western Digital company, is preparing to launch its new 10TB helium-filled HDDs based on Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology, the HGST 10TB SMR HelioSeal HDD.

While high-definition content is getting more and more important for consumers and since there is a significant pressure from corporate and cloud data centers on improvement of storage efficiency and reduced cost, HGST is now preparing to launch its first enterprise-class 10TB HelioSeal and Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) HDD for cloud and cold storage applications.

Offering unprecedented capacity leadership at the lowest $/TB and watts/TB, according to HGST, mostly thanks to proprietary HelioSeal technology and Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR), the new 10TB SMR HelioSeal HDD delivers unprecedented capacity points at an accelerated rate with very low TCO. HGST also ntoed that all future HGST enterprise capacity HDDs will be built on the same HelioSeal platform.

Specifications wise, the new HGST 10TB SMR HelioSeal HDD will be available in a standard 3.5-inch form factor with SATA 6Gbps interface, 128MB of cache and be backed by a five-year warranty. Its meantime between failure (MTBF) rating is set at two million hours.

Unfortunately, HGST did not reveal any details regarding the precise availability date or the price of the new 10TB HDD but earlier reports suggested that we might see it as early as next month.
