Amazon has been apparently hit by counterfeit Kaveri APUs as two customer reviews suggest that A8-7600 was actually shipped to them with different pin arrangement than usual FM2+, and further investigation shows that these are actually Athlon 64 X2 5200+ CPUs dating back to 2007.
Packed in what appears to be an unbroken and sealed A8-7600 box, it is quite surprising that these actually showed up at the UK Amazon, and not some low-level and unknown retailer/e-tailer. While Amazon is currently investigating the situation, some users are stuck with broken Athlon 64 X2 5200+ chips instead of the A8-7800 Kaveri APU they have ordered.
Spotted and further investigated by Overclock3D.net, the counterfeit APU actually even has a heatspreader that makes it look like an A8-7600 APU but apparently it is actually Athlon 64 X2 5200+ AM2 CPU that does not actually even work.
AMD has responded to th issue saying that is isolated incident is not related in any way to AMD's manufacturing or packaging, and that the company is taking these things very seriously and is currently working with Amazon and the local enforcement authorities to conclude this incident quickly and ensure that the rigorous quality and reliability standards that AMD is known for are maintained.
Those couple of buyers will definitely get their replacements from Amazon and this is currently an isolated incident, at least for now.
