Western Digital does not hide its desire to slow down the SSD market and while they already had an SSHD on their catalog, the company showcased another prototype at the Storage Vision 2015 held on 4th and 5th of January, which is equipped with a 64 GB SSD and a 4 TB HDD.
The principle of hybrid SSHDs from Western Digital is quite simple, as it combines the best qualities from both worlds. Having the speed of an SSD while enjoying large capacity of the HDD storage. Their latest model, still in prototype state, will have a 4TB HDD capacity, while featuring 64 or 128GB of SSD cache and will work on a PCIe interface.
The showcased model had a 64 GB SSD part, which is meant to do everything necessary for the system cache and allow for various applications. With this configuration, the prototype managed to reach a score of 4459 points in the PCMark 8 benchmark, which is not a bad score and close to SSD SATA III scores, which usually range between 4600 and 5000 points in the same benchmark.
Even if the showcased SSHD is in prototypes state, these new models will allow Western Digital to offer SSHDs with excellent performance, storage, and price.
