Microsoft preparing cheaper, slimmer Xbox One

AMD working on a 20nm custom APU

As you probably already know, both Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's Playstation are based on 28nm custom APUs and according to recent rumor, AMD might be working on a 20nm APU for Microsoft which could lead to a cheap and possibly a slimmer Xbox One.

The rumor, spotted by Beyond3D forum member, comes from a LinkedIn profile of Daniel McConnell, who is a senior manager at AMD, who states that he has "Successfully planned and executed the first APU for Microsoft’s XBOX One Game Console in 28nm technology and a cost-reduced derivative in 20nm technology" as well as "Assembled and grew two cross-site execution teams for 2 successive XBOX APU revisions. This included developing key technical leads into senior positions allowing for successful execution and future team expansion to handle more SOCs."

This is pretty much a clear indication that Microsoft is planning on a newer, possibly slimmer as well as cheaper Xbox One.

It will probably be a while before we see a new revision of the Xbox One but is definitely good to know that the transition is in early stages and will happen eventually.
