AMD brings Mantle API support to new Civilization game

"Supercharges" performance in the game

AMD has announced that it has joined Firaxis Games in celebration of the release of Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth, which will feature support for AMD's Mantle API from day-one and bring supercharged gaming performance to AMD Radeon graphics card owners.

According to AMD, in performance testing, the AMD Radeon R9 290X graphics card with Mantle API support renders the game at higher frame rates than any other single-GPU graphics card on the market, enabling that same AMD graphics card as well as other AMD Radeon graphics card with Mantle support to outperform the competition.

"AMD Radeon GPUs with Mantle are over a year ahead of other graphics companies in delivering high-throughput, high-efficiency graphics to gamers and developers," said Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager, Product and Platform Solutions Business Unit, AMD. "As gamers settle in for a marathon session of Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth, we're proud that the potent combination of Mantle and the award-winning Graphics Core Next architecture effortlessly enable the definitive experience."

In case you missed it earlier, AMD Mantle is a "low-overhead" graphics API which should improve performance in games by better using multi-core CPUs, streamlining game code execution, virtually eliminating software bottlenecks and utilizing GPU resources with incredible efficiency, or at least much better efficiency than the DirectX 11 API.

AMD was also keen to note that you can actually purchase an AMD Radeon R9 or R7 series GPU with Mantle API support starting at just US $99.
