Google officially unveils new Nexus devices, Android 5.0 Lolipop

The Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player

Proving that all the previous rumors are true, Google has now unveiled a full set of new Nexus devices, including the Motorola-made Nexus 6, HTC-made Nexus 9, Asus-made Nexus Player as well as the new Android 5.0 Lolipop OS.

The list of new Google Nexus devices starts off with the new Nexus 6, a 6-inch phablet made by Motorola. Although we have already heard all about it from various rumors before the official launch, Google has now confirmed that we are looking at a device based on a 5.9-inch QHD 2560x1440 screen and powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 805 SoC with quad-core Krait CPU part clocked at 2.65GHz and Adreno 420 GPU, paired up with 3GB or RAM.

The precise dimensions of the new Nexus 6 are set at 159.26 x 82.98 x 10.06 mm while it tips the scale at 184g which puts it in line with most of the phablets on the market. The rest of the specifications include either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, which is unfortunately not expandable via microSD card slot, as well as rear 13-megapixel f/2.0 camera with dual-LED flash, 2.1-megapixel front camera, front stereo speakers, LTE, 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC and microUSB. As expected, it runs on the new Android 5.0 Lolipop OS.

The Nexus 6 features a 3220mAh battery which should be enough for a full day of usage and also has a Turbo Charging feature, which gets you up to 6 hours of use with only 15 minutes of charging.

The next in line is the HTC-made, Nvidia Tegra K1 powered Nexus 9 tablet. Designed around an 8.9-inch IPS LCD screen which is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and with QXGA 2048x1536 resolution, which adds up to 288ppi of pixel density, the Nexus 9, with its 4:3 aspect ratio, is direct competition to Apple's iPads.

As noted, the Nexus 9 is powered by Nvidia's Tegra K1 SoC, which, in case you somehow missed it, is based on a dual-core Denver CPU part clocked at 2.3GHz and Kepler GPU with 192 shader cores. The Tegra K1 is paired up with 2GB of RAM as well as 16 or 32GB of non-expandable internal storage,

The rest of the specifications of the new Google Nexus 9 tablet include a rear 8-megapixel f/2.4 auto-focus camera with LED flash, 1.6-megapixel f/2.4 front camera, GPS, 802.11ac 2x2 (MIMO) WiFi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1, LTE support, ambient light sensor, gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer, and dual front-facing speakers with HTC BoomSound. It will also run on Android 5.0 Lolipop OS and should be able to fully use it since it is, unlike Nexus 6, which runs on 32-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 SoC, based on 64-bit Tegra K1 SoC.

The Google Nexus 9 tablet also features a 6700mAh battery which, according to Google, should be enough for around 9.5 hours of WiFi and 8.5 hours of LTE browsing. Google will also offer an optional keyboard dock for the Google Nexus 9 which latches on to the tablet magnetically and allow a bit more productivity.

In case you are wondering, the precise dimensions are set at 228.25 x 153.68 x 7.95 mm and it weighs 425g (436g for the LTE version). HTC and Google had to cut some corners so we are looking at a case with metal frame rather than full aluminum body.

The last but not the least is ASUS-made Google Nexus Player, which can stream video content to HDTV device and play all the Android games. It will ship with a voice-enabled remote control and also offer an optional gamepad.

As expected, since both the Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9 will be running on it, Google has also officially announced the name and the version of its newest Android 5.0 Lolipop OS, previously known as the Android L. Earlier previewed at Google I/O, the Android 5.0 Lolipop will bring the new Material Design language and pave the way for 64-bit Android OS running devices, thanks to a new ART runtime.

Google revealed that the new Android 5.0 Lolipop will seamlessly bridge the connection between devices and include plenty of new enhancements including new lockscreen notifications, multi-user accounts, guest mode and much more.

According to Google, pre-orders for the Nexus 6 will kick off on October 29th while first devices should ship sometime in November with a price of an unlocked, SIM-free, 32GB version set at US $649. Earlier rumors sugget that in Europe, Google Nexus 6 could hit retail with a price set at €569 for the 32GB version and €649 for the 64GB one, which are quite steep for Nexus device. The Google Nexus 9 will be available in three versions, 16GB WiFi, 32GB WiFi and the 32GB 4G LTE version. While pre-orders should start on Google Play Store on October 17th, the Nexus 9 is expected to ship to early buyers on November 3rd with a price set at US $399 and US $479 for two WiFi-only versions and US $599 for the 4G LTE version. The Nexus Player should go on pre-order together with the Nexus 9, on October 17th, with a price set at US $99 for the player and US $39 for the gamepad.
