According to a new report, it appears that Nvidia might having some supply troubles with both of the GM204 Maxwell based Geforce GTX 980 and Geforce GTX 970 graphics cards. Although launched just over three weeks ago at Nvidia's Game24 event, it is quite hard to find the GTX 980 or the GTX 970 available at some of the major retailers/e-tailers like the Newegg.com.
While both graphics cards scored some impressive results, got nothing but praise in reviews and even managed to strike a rather hard blow to AMD, mostly due to a rather attractive MSRP for the GTX 970, all is not well for Nvidia's GM204 Maxwell based graphics cards since, according to the report over at
Wccftech.com, out of 16 different GTX 970 and 12 different GTX 980 graphics cards listed at Newegg.com, not a single on is in stock.
The similar situation is over at Amazon.com and in case you manage to find it available, other third party retailers, which have some of those GTX 980/970 graphics cards in stock are asking a bit of a steep price premium. For example, GTX 980 is available for US $649 which is a good US $100 over the official MSRP and some retailers go as high as US $749. The GTX 970, if found available, goes for about US $429-$469, which is, although a bit more reasonable, still US $100 over MSRP.
AMD had a similar problem with their R9 290 series back in the good old days of digital currency mining, and similar to AMD, Nvidia's problem seems to be only US related, as European retailers/e-tails, like the Scan.co.uk, have plenty of GTX 980 and GTX 970 graphics cards available, according to the report.
There could be plenty of reasons for the short supply. Nvidia might have trouble coping with the demand or even some allocation problems since Europe has plenty of those graphics cards available. In any case, the supply should be better soon, even for the US, and despite AMD's recent price drop, Nvidia certainly did a great job with the launch of GTX 980 and GTX 970 graphics cards.
