Samsung to manufacture Apple's A9 SoC on 14nm

To be 20 percent faster, 35 percent more efficient

While it has only been a month since Apple has launched its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus based on the new Apple A8 SoC, we now have some more details regarding the new Apple A9 SoC which should be based on 14nm manufacturing process and manufactured by none other than Samsung.

According to a fresh report coming from Wccftech.com, Samsung expects to start manufacturing Apple's A9 on 14nm manufacturing process by the end of this year. The announcement came as a result of recent decreasing profits for Samsung. Apple has been slowly distancing itself from Samsung in last few years and according to recent reports only 30 percent of Apple's A8 SoC orders were fulfilled by Samsung while rest was done by TSMC, one of the world's largest chip maker.

According to the newest report, Samsung expects its profits to rise as it claims that the Apple's next-gen SoC, the A9, will be manufactured using 14nm FinFet manufacturing process. The new manufacturing process should bring 15 percent reduce size when compared to the 20nm manufacturing process as well as 20 percent higher performance and 35 percent better power efficiency.

Samsung is not only going for Apple, as according to ZDNet.com, the company expects its 14nm manufacturing process capability to be used by both AMD and Qualcomm. Qualcomm is probably the biggest win as its Snapdragon SoCs are currently holding the biggest part of the SoC market.

While TSMC was so far the biggest chip manufacturing company, it will definitely get som healthy competition. Intel is also making 14nm chips, including the 14nm Core M SoC aimed at 2-in-1 Ultrabooks while TSMCs next step is 16nm FinFET which is expected in 2016.
