As expected, Microsoft has now announced its latest version of the Windows operating system, and to the surprise of many, it is called the Windows 10 and not the Windows 9 as expected.
During its event held in San Francisco, Microsoft's Chief of Windows, Terry Myerson, has unveiled the new Windows 10 OS saying that "Windows is at a Threshold and now it's time for a new Windows. Our new Windows must be built from the ground up for a mobile first cloud first world. It unlocks new experiences to allow customers to work play and connect."
While many expected that Microsoft will follow the earlier naming scheme and announced the new OS as the Windows 9, Microsoft decided to pull a surprise out of its hat and call it the Windows 10. When asked about the change of the name and the naming scheme, Myerson simply noted that Windows 9 "wouldn't be right".
According to the company's announcement, the Windows 10 will be aimed at every type of device, including desktops, notebooks, tablets and smartphones and even feature a single app store, or simply as Microsoft is calling it, "the one application platform". Myerson also added that "Windows 10 will deliver the right experience at the right time. Windows 10 will be our most comprehensive platform."
As far as the functionality and design are concerned, the Windows 10 will, according to Microsoft, be a result of the best of Windows 7 and Windows 8, mixed together into one package. It will feature the new Start Menu which combines the traditional Start from the Windows 7 with the Metro Home form the Windows 8. While it will be touch-optimized, Microsoft has promised that it has not abandoned PC users with a mouse and keyboard and that the Windows 10 will be "the right experience on the right device.
Microsoft also used a big piece of its event to talk about Windows 10 enterprise side, stating that Windows 10 will be "familiar for these companies" and that it will be the "greatest enterprise platform, ever."
The new Technical Preview version of the Windows 10 will be a part of the new "Windows Insider Program" and will be available as of tomorrow, October 1st. The consumer version of the new OS will be detailed a bit more at Microsoft's build conference scheduled for April next year while launch is currently scheduled for sometime in mid-2015.
