Price to make iPhone 6/6 Plus revealed in teardown

Cost between US $200 and $215 to make

A new teardown has revealed a rough price estimate for both the Apple iPhone 6 and Apple iPhone 6 Plus, putting them at around US $200 and $215.

Apple, and most smartphone manufacturers, have been known to charge a ridiculous amount of money for their premium smartphones and despite the fact that these manufacturing prices do not include the cost of marketing or distribution, it is still quite surprising to see how much do these manufacturers earn on a single smartphone.

According to the estimates done by IHS after the teardown, it costs anywhere between US $200 and US $247 to make the iPhone 6, including labor which is estimated at about US $4.50 per device. Considering that iPhone 6 sells for US $849 in the US without contract, this leaves quite a margin for Apple. The situation with iPhone 6 Plus is even worse, as the cost to make it is somewhere between US $215 and US $263 and it sell in the US for US $949 without contract.

To make things worse, this is above any other margin that Apple had on its earlier smartphones, including the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 5S which both shared the margin of around 69 percent.

While Apple will certainly try to spin this around, we are quite sure that they are currently more busy with the recent bending issue of the iPhone 6 Plus.
