Last night, Apple has officially announced its newest iPhone smartphones, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. Both devices will feature Apple's new A8 chip which will bring performance improvements across the board, new Retina HD displays with ion-strengthened glass as well as plenty of other improvements expected from new smartphones and rumored earlier.
The new iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch IPS 1334x750 display which adds up to 325 ppi of pixel density, while the bigger iPhone 6 Plus packs a 5.5-inch 1920x1080 FullHD display, which is 401 ppi of pixel density. As noted, both displays will feature a full sRGB wide color gamut and "dual-domain pixels" which should give them a wider angle of view.
The heart of both new iPhones is the 2nd generation 64-bit capable A8 chip which is 13 percent smaller than the A7 chip and has up to 25 percent faster CPU performance and up to 50 percent faster in the GPU department.
The new A8 chip has been again paired up with M8 motion co-processor which will feature all the necessary sensor duties.
Design wise, new Apple iPhones are not anything new but are definitely the thinnest iPhones ever made. While the iPhone 5S was already impressive with 7.6mm thickness, the new iPhone 6 is 6.9mm thick while the iPhone 6 Plus is 7.1mm thick.
Specification wise, both smartphones will feature a new 802.11ac WiFi, which is, according to Apple, up to three times faster than WiFi on the iPhone 5S, as well as usual Bluetooth 4.0 and the NFC, which will be used for the new Apple Pay service. Both iPhones will also feature 4G LTE connectivity with support for over 200 LTE carriers around the world as well as support for Voice over LTE (voLTE).
Both cameras on both devices are pretty much the same and updated to an 8-megapixe rear camera with 1.5µ pixels and f/2.2 aperture. The iPhone 6 will have to stick with digital image stabilization while iPhone 6 Plus also got optical image stabilization.
The iSight sensor has been also improved with much better and faster focus, face detection and much more. Since selfies are a new big thing, Apple has also improved the front camera as well. The new FaceTime HD front camera will get a new sensor and wider f/2.2 aperture which lets in over 80 percent more light and it also got a few new features including burst selfies mode, improved face detection for group selfies and automatic single HDR photo.
As expected, both new smartphones will run on the new Apple iOS 8 OS.
The new 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will cost US $199 for the 16GB version, US $299 for the 64GB version and US $399 for the 128GB version, all on a two-year contract. The bigger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus will cost US $299 for the base 16GB version, US $399 for the 64GB version and rather high US $499 for the 128GB version, also on a two-year contract. European and carrier-free prices are still unknown but we will cover those in a separate news post.
Both smartphones will be available for pre-order as of 12th of September and will be available as of 19th of September.
