PC shipments down in Q2 2014

Lower drop than expected

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has announced its latest reports stating that PC shipments went down by 1.7 percent in Q2 2014, which was actually lower than predicted.

Worldwide PC shipments were at 74.4 million units in the second quarter of 2014 (2Q14), which is a decline of 1.7 percent compared to the same period last year. While PC shipments dropped, IDC report states that this is actually the lowest drop since 2012, which shows that the PC market is definitely improving.

As far as the geographic basis is concerned, Europe, the United States and Canada showed the strongest growth. Loren Loverde, Vice President at Worldwide PC Trackers noted that the recent strength in mature regions is definitely a positive sign which is driven by the rebound from weaker demand last year and that we can look for some recovery in emerging regions in future.

The better than expected results seem to be a direct result of good intake of lower-end systems, including Chromebooks, according th Jay Chou, Senior Research Analyst at Worldwide PC Trackers.

As far as the vendors are concerned, Lenovo still leads the pack and has grew in double digits in nearly all markets, while it is closely followed by HP which managed to grow by 10 percent, which is the highest growth since the second quarter of 2010. Dell also managed to ship 10.5 million units which is its highest quarter in more than two years. Acer shipments dropped by 2.5 percent while ASUS grew by 3.3 percent.

Hopefully, IDC's prediction that the PC market is getting better will show in the next few quarters.
