Oculus VR starts shipping the Rift DK2

10.000 units at first

Pre-orders for the developer kit 2 of the Oculus Rift VR have been available since May, and those 10.000 who ordered it are going to find it pretty soon in their mailboxes.

Oculus VR is going to ship 10.000 Developers Kit 2 of the Oculus Rift, at least for now. Unlike the first version, the DK2 will feature a 1080p OLED panel and a webcam for motion capture.

Pre-orders have hit 45.000 units, and those 35.000 extra units will be shipped during the next few weeks, most likely between August and September. The Developer Kit 1 sold 60.000 units, and if we add that up to these 45.000 of the DK2, we get over 100.000 units of the Oculus Rift on the market, which is an astonishing number for a product which is still in development. The price, unfortunately, is not for everybody: 350$ for a product that is not finished could be a bit too much.

The next step will be the consumer version, which most likely will be slightly modified by Facebook and Carbon Design team, which was recently acquired by Oculus.
