Debian is a well-known GNU/Linux distribution. It's probably one of the most common OS you can find on server systems. Since they started releasing new version of Debian, a lot of server administrators had problems because it's not always easy to change OS on those kind of machines. That's probably why Debian 6 reached the “LTS” status, which means Long Time Support.

The project started back in April: to offer an LTS version of Debian 6 “Squeeze”, without relying on the official Debian developer's team, but asking for help to anyone in the community with the proper knowledge and will.

You might be asking what is the motivation behind such a project. As a matter of fact, quite a few companies starte to back the project as soon as it was announced. This clearly indicates there is a demand for "Long Tim Support" Linux distributions. Amongst backers there are institutions and companies like for instance Électricité de France, the University of Oxford, Deezer and Offensive Security. A lot of new companies will come in the next month, while Freexian, french company founded by Raphael Hertzog, is offering a service for those who want to help but don't have enough time to spare.

The developing team didn't realize how big this could be until they started, and they noted that if the support will stay the same, and Debian 6 LTS will be liked, they will work on Debian 7 “Wheezy” and Debian 8 “Jessie” in LTS versions.
